I have no idea the age or use of this primitive hand carved wooden box. The style of the box could have been hand carved here in NC or from one of the islands (wood looks like mahogany) or even with the half moon pattern , from Morocco.
It could be a gun powder /wadding holder, or tobacco holder. I wish I knew. We found it at an estate sale, with so many unusual items, the couple had been avid travelers. No one had an idea about this interesting primitive piece.
